Toyota rolls out special APM van series for 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Toyota has unveiled the APM, an original all-electric minivan series conceptualized as a means of transportation for the guests of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. The production run will be limited to 200 units.

The car manufacturer calls the project ‘unique’, but we have actually seen something similar in style at the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics. The USSR invited its guests to have a ride on open-sided road trains converted from the RAF-2203 Latvija minibuses.

The Japanese e-van is 3,900 millimeters (12.8 feet) long, 1,600 mm (5.25 ft.) wide and 2,000 mm (6.56 ft.) tall. It can take up to five passengers. The driver’s seat occupies the middle position at the front, followed by a three-seat sofa and finally a rear seat for two.

The Toyota APM features a retractable access ramp for passengers with limited mobility. Finally, in case of emergency it can be quickly converted into an ambulance car complete with stretchers.

The doors are absent, and the passengers only have the railings to hold on, but this shouldn’t be a problem, since the electric minivan won’t accelerate past 19 kilometers per hour (11.8 mph). The tech specs are unknown, but Toyota says a single charging should be enough for 100 kilometers (62 miles) of range.
