Renault/Dacia Duster may go hybrid in Europe

Renault says it may end up having to switch its Duster SUV range to electrified (hybrid) powertrains in Europe over increasingly strict environmental laws. This will also concern all SUVs sold under its sub-brand, Dacia.

According to the latest emission regulations, the average CO₂ output must not exceed 95 grams per 1 kilometer traveled. In the entire Renault Group, it is the Dacia brand that faces the most criticism because of its higher emission profile. Unless the company takes action to improve its drivetrain designs, it will be facing nearly half a billion Euros in fines next year.

The market analysts predict that electrifying the entire Dacia lineup would cost €670,000,000. Given its ‘affordable’ reputation, the marque will be unable to collect the required amount by raising prices across the board.

Renault Group is currently looking into various ways of cutting R&D costs to make its 2020 Duster as nature-friendly as possible.
