McLaren says crossovers are not cool

A mere several years ago, no one would imagine an SUV wearing the badge of Bentley, Lamborghini or Rolls-Royce. Nowadays, the Bentayga, the Urus and the Cullinan are out on the market and quite popular, with the Aston Martin DBX and the Ferrari Purosangue expected to join them soon. But not everyone is happy with the status quo: McLaren, for one, says it will not stoop down to producing crossovers.

According to Darren Goddard, Director of McLaren Sport Series, there is ‘nothing cool’ about CUVs and SUVs. He expressed conviction that the only reason anyone would ever design an SUV is when one needs an easy money grab. That said, the luxury car market operates under largely different laws than those of the mass market. In the view of the above, the company intends to keep its specialization as a super sports car manufacturer for the nearest future. Among other things, it will be releasing the all-new McLaren GT later this year.

Despite this, it looks like McLaren wholeheartedly supports another modern trend: the switch to all-electric means of transportation. The company has already announced an electric sports car and it currently assessing the prospects and planning things ahead. The actual design phase has not begun yet, though, as the engineers are still searching for a way to make a battery-powered vehicle feel every bit as pleasant to drive as its ICE counterpart.
