Subaru to discontinue EJ20, EJ25 engines

The Japanese carmaker will be attending the Tokyo Motor Show 2019 with a special sedan/saloon series titled the WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition, meant to say farewell to the legendary EJ20 engine model.

The two-liter, flat-four engine originally came out with the 1989 Subaru Legacy. It has spawned plenty of modifications since, ranging between 1.5 and 2.5 liters in displacement, both turbocharged and non-turbo, for street-legal and race cars.

However, the company has long since switched to the newer FA/FB powertrains, ultimately leaving the Japanese Subaru WRX STI (308 hp / 230 kW) the only EJ20-powered car on the market. All other countries get their STIs with better, 2.5-liter EJ25 mills, although those will soon be discontinued, too.

Compared to the main series, the Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition features golden-tinted BBS wheels, silvery brake calipers, red grille and rear bumper accents, and a commemorative plaque on the engine lid. Recaro front seats are optional.

The production run will amount to 555 units, and pre-ordering books will open at the Tokyo Motor Show in late October. Subaru expects to sell the entire batch before the end of the year and complete the shipping in March 2020.
