New Ram 1500 announced with class-leading driving range

Ram Truck Company has released the technical specs of its updated 1500 pickup truck equipped with a new 3.0-liter, six-cylinder diesel engine.

The unit churns out 263 hp (196 kW) and 651 Nm (480 pound-feet) of torque. But it is fuel efficiency that sets it apart from the rest of the market. In its 4WD implementation, the new Ram 1500 consumes 11.2 liters per 100 kilometers in an urban environment, 8.11l on a highway and 9.8l in mixed cycle. The RWD version is even more efficient with 10.7, 9.05 and 7.35 liters per 100 kilometers, respectively.

In terms of U.S. gallons, the 4WD Ram 1500 has 21 miles per gallon in the city, 29 MPG outside of it and 24 MPG in a mixed-use scenario. The RWD variant improves things further with 22, 26 and 32 MPG, respectively. One getting its 124.9-liter (33-gallon) tank full, the pickup has no trouble covering 1,055 miles (1,699 kilometers), a range so far unsurpassed in this market segment.

For reference, the diesel-powered, rear-wheel-driven Ford F-150 consumes 7.84 liters per 100 km (=30 MPG). Given the 98.4-liter (26-gallon) tank, t can cover up to 780 miles (1,255 kilometers) before running dry. The comparable Chevrolet Silverado 1500 appears more economical with its 7.13 liters per 100 km/h on highway (33 MPG), but its smaller 90.8-liter (24-gallon) tank is only enough for 791 miles (1,273 km) of range.
