2021 Toyota Mirai debuts with revised looks, better range

Toyota has unveiled the second generation of its Mirai FCEV. The hydrogen-powered car will be exhibited for everyone to see at the impending Tokyo Motor Show.

The new Mirai utilizes TNGA-N, the RWD chassis of the Japan-sold Toyota Crown. Its exterior is now more coupe-like than before, and the default paint is a new shade of blue.

Changes inside also seem pretty major, with the infotainment unit now boasting a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, and the instrument panel residing directly in front of the driver, rather than in the middle of the dash, like before.

Little is known about the powertrain, save for the fact that it will incorporate a next-gen electrochemical power generator. A larger hydrogen cell array along with several other upgrades will reportedly translate into 30% more driving range. Whereas the current-gen Mirai does 650 kilometers (400 miles) according to NEDC ratings, the new one should be able to cover up to 845 km (525 mi) prior to needing a refill.

The Tokyo show car will be a concept vehicle, rather than a finished production sample. Production will not begin until late 2020, and shipments will be limited to the USA and Europe.
