Almost 800 hp at the crank: What the new Supra is capable of

When the new A90 Toyota Supra hit the market, USA and Japan were the first to roll out some performance upgrades for it, with Germany lagging behind for once. This is what the Dreihundert team, from Dresden, is currently trying to make up for.

The guys were apparently impressed by the successes of their fellow tuners from overseas, who had already managed to push the BMW I6 engine from its stock 340 hp (254 kW) to 500, 600, and even 1000 hp (373, 447, and 745 kilowatts, respectively). However, their first tuning attempt culminated in permanent engine failure. Their second one was far more successful.

Dreihundert used a single massive Borg Warner EFR8474 turbocharger for the task, honed cylinder liners, more robust piston rods, and a redesigned crankshaft with oil grooves. They also fitted the car with a methanol injection system and reprogrammed the ECU.

As a result, the sports car showed 781 hp (582 kW) at the crank and 709 hp (530 kW) at the wheels, surpassing the stock figures by a factor of more than two.

The boost kit will become available later, when the tuner finds a way to make the upgrade more stable (in particular, reinforce the transmission).
