Video: Russians make transparent acrylic glass wheels

Russia-based tuner Garage 54 has filmed a video dedicated to their latest project: see-through car wheels made from Plexiglas (also called organic or acrylic glass).

The thermoplastic substance is much more resistant to all kinds of damage than the regular glass. The company uses durable Plexiglas discs 20 mm (0.8”) thick, building them into metallic rims.

The result certainly looks refreshingly cool, but it remains to be seen just whether it is practical enough. During the original production, Garage 54 miscalculated the wheel size a bit, and the test car was difficult to drive with the wrong-sized wheels on. The work is underway to fix that.

Whether it ever gets adopted by the mass market or not, the approach certainly looks interesting and opens up new design opportunities.
