Like In The Movies: Hans Zimmer agrees to provide soundtrack for BMW EVs

Famous movie soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer will endow Bavarian battery cars with unique ‘voices’ that will warn pedestrians and let you tell one model from another by its sound profile alone.

Ever since the hybrid and all-electric cars exploded in popularity, their number has been growing due to the increasingly strict environmental laws. One of the primary concerns associated with EVs is the lack of sound normally produced by the internal combustion engine, which increases the risk of accidents due to pedestrians failing to hear the car approach. This is what the German automobile marque aims to fix – and with extra style, at that.

Hans Zimmer has written countless scores for movies and has Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe awards in his collection. According to the contract, he will collaborate with BMW Chief Sound Designer Renzo Vitale to compose authentic imitated engine sounds for every hybrid and all-electric vehicle on the current lineup. This also includes the in-car sounds that the driver and passengers will be able to hear.

It has to be noted that other companies tend towards creativity in solving this particular problem, too. For one, Mercedes-AMG has Linkin Park composing sound profiles for them. For another, Tesla cars can emit any number of pre-determined sounds while moving, ranging from wind gusts through hoof beats all the way to goat bleating.
