Car spotters have caught the camo-clad Genesis GV80 out in the open many times, but today, the first spy shots showing a non-cladded production sample surfaced online.
The concept car debuted two years ago, and the launch had initially been planned for November 2019, but the carmaker postponed it due to alleged technical problems.
The production car indeed looks a fair bit simpler than its concept version: the dual horizontal headlights are still there, but the side cameras are gone, replaced by the more conventional mirrors.
Inside, the steering wheel has two spokes, the infotainment display appears to hover over the dash, the climate control unit has a touch panel all to itself, and the gear selector is a knob, rather than a stick. Perhaps most interestingly, however, the instrument panel is non-digital. Given the modern trends, it would be logical to assume that only the cheapest trim will ship like this, while the rest will be getting the digital dash.
Rumor has it that the Genesis GV80 comes based on the same platform as the second generation of the G80 business sedan. As such, it will likely be available in five-, six- and seven-seat variants. The engine range will include gasoline engines with 2.5 to 3.5 liters of displacement rated between 280 and 380 hp (210 – 283 kW) and a single 3.0-liter diesel turbo with 280 hp (210 kW) at the crank. A hybrid version is also possible later on. Also, while the entry-level GV80 might be RWD only, the higher trims will likely get AWD.
That said, all of the above is still nothing but conjecture. Sales should start early next year, so we would be better off just waiting until the official reveal.
As for Genesis, the marque has serious plans to expand its SUV lineup. The more compact GV70 will complement the range later in 2020, and a third SUV should emerge in 2021.
