Tata Motors launches the Altroz, its premium urban hatchback

The Indian carmaker claims that the car, which will soon hit showrooms priced from 500,000 Indian Rupees (~7,000 USD), comes perfectly equipped for everyday use in towns and cities.

The new Altroz utilizes the ALFA chassis design that should lend itself equally well to ICE-powered cars, hybrids and all-electric cars. For the time being, though, it ships with a choice between two IC engines. One is a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline unit rated at 77 hp (57 kW) and 86 Nm (63 lb-ft) of torque, and the other one is a 1.5-liter turbocharged diesel packing 90 hp (67 kW) alongside 200 Nm (148 lb-ft). Both link to the same kind of five-speed manual transmission. Later versions will introduce DCT and a new gas engine with 102 hp (77 kW) to the lineup.

All trim levels ship with an advanced infotainment system with a seven-inch display and voice input support. The more expensive variants of the hatchback add digital dashboard, cruise control, and engine start/stop system.
