Rumor: Toyota Land Cruiser 300 underway to August premiere

The first rumors about the impending next generation of the Toyota Land Cruiser flared up last year, and now a number of Japanese car magazines claim they have learned the launch timeframe of the Cruiser 300.

According to these reports, the SUV should be revealed in August 2020. This sounds a bit odd, considering that the company hasn’t shown us a single teaser pic until now. What you see in the image gallery and the video here are unofficial 3D renders and fakes, because no spy shots have leaked so far of the alleged Land Cruiser 300. Toyota might as well have been testing the SUV in restricted areas thus far, but this seems not very likely. That said, the current Land Cruiser 200 is already 12 years old and begging to be updated.

Rumors also existed that the new Land Cruiser may drop V8 engines from the lineup. Now, the Japanese media say the new Cruiser will arrive packing a hybrid powertrain based on a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 300 hp (224 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) total. This is comparable to the capabilities of the current 4.6-liter V8 version, with the only advantage of the hybrid version being its fuel efficiency.

The SUV should also switch to the TNGA platform, losing some weight in the process while maintaining the body-on-frame design. Finally, it is reported that it will trade its automatic transmission for a new CVT.
We would wait for Toyota to comment on any of this before making conclusions, though.
