New Hyundai pickup to share the engine with the Genesis GV80

What could a practical and affordable Hyundai truck have in common with a premium Genesis SUV, like the GV80? Granted, a single corporation owns both brands, but beyond that?

It was announced earlier today that the body-on-frame pickup truck that Hyundai has spent the past several years developing would get the same 3.0 V6 TDI engine as the recently revealed Genesis GV80. The mill churns out 280 hp (209 kW) along with 588 Nm (434 lb-ft) of torque on the GV80. It consumes 8.5 liters of gas per 100 kilometers covered (UK: 33 MPG; USA: 27.7 MPG), which makes it pretty efficient for an SUV engine.

The engine choice looks logical, given Hyundai’s earlier statement that the truck is a typical workhorse that requires plenty of torque to be efficient in its everyday applications. Furthermore, reusing an existing engine model is often more cost-efficient than designing a new one from scratch.

Hyundai said that it would be installing the same engine on its other vehicles later, including commercial ones.

As for the upcoming pickup truck, we still have no idea what it looks like or what it is even called. Our best bet so far is that it will be based on the Santa Cruz Concept introduced five years ago (see the gallery and the video).
