Maserati schedules a hybrid car for Beijing show premiere

According to insider reports, the Italian carmaker will be attending the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2020) on April 21 – 30, 2020 with its first-ever hybrid vehicle.

The details aren’t here yet, so let’s review our options. The car is most likely based on the Ghibli sedan platform and supports charging (i.e., a PHEV). The gas-powered Ghibli ships with a V6 3.0 gas turbo available in 350hp (261 kW) and 430hp (321kW) versions, as well as a diesel turbo in 250hp (186kW) and 275hp (205kW) variants. All these invariably connect to the same eight-speed automatic transmission design, which can send the momentum to the rear axle or both axles. The 275hp diesel spec needs 6.3 seconds to get from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph), while the range-topping Ghibli S Q4 manages it in 4.7 seconds.

It should be mentioned that Maserati did its best to postpone electrification of its range, but ultimately yielded to the times. Its current plan for the next few years includes launching multiple hybrid and all-electric models, and it has recently started testing its proprietary electric powertrain design. The new GranTurisom and GranCabrio will be the first to take advantage of it, and Maserati promises us a ‘unique engine sound experience’ with both models.
