Morgan Plus 4 goes into new generation after 70 years of stability

The Morgan Plus 4 is extremely conservative even by British standards: with its design barely altered from the original blueprints dating back to the 1930s, the sports car is quite unique in its vintage charm. But even Morgan felt it was time to move on.

The brand-new Morgan Plus Four (note the spell-out number) may still look like something out of a time travel machine, but it only inherits around 3 percent of parts from its predecessor. The CX-Generation chassis with its dual-wishbone suspension comes from the technically superior Morgan Plus Six, is made almost entirely of aluminum, and weighs in at mere 97 kilos (214 pounds) while being twice as rigid as its stainless-steel counterpart from before.

For the first time on record, the Morgan Plus Four gets a turbocharged engine straight from the factory – and a BMW one, at that! The two-liter, four-cylinder B48 unit features direct injection and churns out 258 British horsepower (192 kilowatts). The torque depends on the transmission type: six-speed manual clamps it at 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) max, while eight-speed automatic supports 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). Getting from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour takes 5.2 seconds on manual and 4.8 s on automatic. The top speed lies at 240 km/h (149 mph).

The first generation packed a two-liter Ford mill with only 156 hp (116 kW) and 201 Nm (150 lb-ft) at its disposal. It ran 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds at best and maxed out at 189 km/h (117 mph).

This means a more-than-65% increase in engine power output, which is especially nice considering that the fuel consumption barely grew at all. The new Plus Four consumes between 7 and 7.3 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to 38.5 – 40 miles per gallon in Great Britain and 32.2 – 33.6 MPG in the USA.

The curb weight with the tank empty now amounts to roughly 1,012 kilos (2,230 lbs), a sizeable gain from the earlier 927 kg (2,043 lbs).

The entire bodywork has been redone from scratch, Morgan claims, leaving us somewhat nonplussed. The headlights, the doors and the exhaust tips are the only parts we would call visibly changed.

Inside, customers may choose from 18 kinds of leather trim for the seats, 14 kinds of wood décor, 16 floor mat designs, 13 stitching colors, and so on.

The standard feature list mentions ABS, LED headlights, leather cabin, central car locking, and 15-inch alloys. HVAC and audio with Bluetooth support are optional.

The Morgan Plus Four roadster is already available to buy in Great Britain, with prices starting from £62,995 for the stick-shift version and £64,995 for the automatic.
