Confirmed: VW ID.3 launch postponed indefinitely over software issues

Rumors that the all-electric Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback could be late due to numerous software deficiencies started circulating last year, but, as it turns out now, the situation is frankly dire.

The launch is now officially postponed from this summer with no new dates named, and Volkswagen is looking forward to paying a hefty fine for defaulting on its environment preservation contract. According to the latter, the company pledged to ship 100,000 units of the ID.3 before the end of the year.

The battery hatchback came into the spotlight before the wide audience in September 2019, and production started in Zwickau, Germany in November. However, due to their faulty software, the EVs never arrived into showrooms and are still sitting on an open parking area near Leipzig waiting for a fix. The bigger problem yet is that the software remains pretty raw to this date – so much so that the ID.3 cannot gain street-legal status.

It is reported that negotiations are underway between Volkswagen AG and Daimler AG to team up on designing brand-new software for the troubled ID.3.
