BMW reveals hydrogen-powered X5 specs

The BMW i Hydrogen Next Concept unveiled several months ago comes based on the X5 chassis and should reach the market in 2022. In the meantime, here are its technical specs.

The SUV utilizes the fifth generation of the eDrive system and consumes hydrogen to produce up to 374 hp (279 kW). Its dual gas tanks can hold up to six kilograms (13.2 pounds) of condensed hydrogen at 700 Bar, and complete refueling is a matter of a few minutes. The electro-chemical generator churns out 170 hp (127 kW), and the exhaust system breathes out harmless water steam.

The first experimental batch of vehicles should emerge in two years, but BMW doesn’t promise us mass production until late 2020s.

On a related note, the Bavarian carmaker has been cooperating with Toyota on hydrogen cell-powered car R&D for seven years already. In 2015, the company released a few 5 Series hatchbacks and i8 sports cars based on Toyota Mirai powertrain components.
