Drag Race: Jet-powered Bloodhound LSR vs. F1 racer & Bugatti Chiron

This latest video by Bloodhound Land Speed Record puts the company’s supersonic jet car up against a Formula one racecar, a Bugatti Chiron, and what the creators called ‘a standard road car.

The caveat here is that the comparison was purely virtual and based on mathematical formulae. The Bloodhound LSR is a jet-engine powered car with tons of own weight, so its launch dynamics is not that impressive. In fact, it yields to all other competitors at the start, but manages to overtake the Chiron at 19 seconds in, going at 443 km/h (275 mph). A second later, the uncredited ‘F1 racecar’ also falls behind. Naturally, with all the other contenders maxing out on acceleration, the LSR keeps gaining momentum.

In 2019, the jet car accelerated to 628 miles per hour (1,010 km/h) in mere 50.1 seconds. Its creators have much greater plans in mind: they want to take it to 800 mph (1,287.48 km/h) first, and ultimately to 1,000 mph (1,609.34 km/h).

That said, the team has recently acknowledged it was struggling financially and might have to postpone the race scheduled for the summer. This, and the coronavirus pandemic threatens to seal the fate of the ambitious project unless the situation changes soon.
