1978 Mercedes-Benz SL gets converted into an EV

British auto body shop The SL Shop has unveiled SportLine ZERO, essentially a restored and electrified version of the classical Mercedes-Benz 350 SL roadster.

The company acquired the car without engine or transmission, and proceeded to take it apart down to the last bolt to replace worn-out parts, remove rust and oil things up.

Originally powered by a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V8, the roadster received dual electric motors and a Tesla traction battery, only gaining 100 kilos (220 lbs) of weight in the process. The tuner claims it now has perfect per-axle weight distribution, 240 kilometers (150 miles) of driving range, adjustable suspension and excellent dynamic performance (although no specific numbers are provided).

The SL Shop admits that it has no plans to convert other retro cars into EVs: with this project, the company tried to assess the viability of electrifying the Mercedes-Benz SL roadster, specifically.
