Mazda shows off its video game supercar

Mazda announced its Wankel-engined RX-Vision GT3 supercar two months ago, and its parameters were truly impressive – but as the world soon realized, the concept vehicle only existed as a 3D model meant for the video game Gran Turismo Sport.

The new in-game footage demonstrates Mazda’s latest fantasy in nice detail. According to the developer, a Skyactiv racing-grade rotary engine sits under the hood and delivers 560 hp (418 kW) to the wheels. The company has used similar engines in its racecars before: for instance, its Mazda 787B racecar emerged victorious from a Le-Mans endurance race nearly three decades ago.

What remains unknown is just whether there will be a comeback of Wankel engines anytime soon. Mazda had repeatedly stated that it could be very challenging to adapt these engines to the current environmental standards. However, the company is sufficiently invested in this technology field to keep researching it, and may ultimately issue a hybrid sports car with electric motors propelling it forward and a rotary engine burning fuel to generate additional power.
