Mercedes-Benz spied sending its G-Wagon out for a serious off-road test

These latest spy photos show what appears to be a still-unannounced Mercedes-Benz G-Class version built for off-road enthusiasts. Overall, it looks like the 4×4² spec from the previous generation (shown in the video) is getting a successor.

No official information is available on the new G-Class 4×4² to date. As evidenced by the shots, the SUV gets portal beam axles, high profile tires, flared fenders, a spare wheel on the tailgate, a rack on the roof, and an underrun bar.

Rumor has it that the new spec will ship with the regular 585-hp (436-kW) engine of the latest Mercedes-AMG G 63, but this cannot be confirmed yet. The test vehicle can be seen wearing the bumper, radiator grille and brakes of the more affordable G 500.

For reference, the old 4×4² had 422 hp (315 kW) and 610 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque.
