Maserati unveils a new Ghibli teaser, fails to show the Ghibli

Late last winter, Maserati announced its first hybrid car based on the Ghibli sedan platform. The reveal had been scheduled for the 2020 Beijing Auto Show, but with the show canceled, the company posted a teaser video instead.

The short clip uploaded on YouTube today succeeds in revealing absolutely nothing about the car it is supposed to be dedicated to. Instead, it shows a cheesy CGI lightning effect striking the trident on top of Maserati HQ, causing the entire building to light up with electricity. The metaphor couldn’t be any more obvious, but where’s the car?

There is only one intriguing bit of information in the entire press release, and that is Maserati calling its upcoming sedan “absolutely new”. This contradicts the Italian car marque’s own roadmap published last year, which makes no mention of launching a new Ghibli generation. On the other hand, this wouldn’t be surprising, given that the model is already seven years old.

Once the Ghibli is out and shipping, the carmaker intends to switch the facelifted Quattroporte and Levante models to hybrid power. The brand-new MC20 supercar and an unannounced compact SUV will follow suit later on. In 2021, Maserati will launch its first pure EVs – the second-gen GranTurismo and GranCabrio.
