2021 Toyota Hilux shows up with better looks, suspension and diesel power

True to its promises, Toyota has unveiled its updated Hilux pickup truck with its 2.8-liter diesel engine boosted from 177 hp (132 kW) to 204 hp (152 kW).

The max torque rises from 450 to 500 Newton-meters (from 332 to 369 lb-ft, repsectively) and is now available as early on as 1,600 RPM. Idle rotation drops from 850 to 680 RPM, and the pickup now hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in ten seconds flat, rather than 12.8 s like before.

The average fuel consumption now amounts to 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers covered. This roughly corresponds to 36 MPG in the UK and 30 MPG in the USA. As usual, customers can choose between six-speed manual and automatic.

Another major change concerns the suspension, which becomes noticeably softer thanks to new springs and shock absorbers. Power steering has been tweaked, and the multimedia display can be set to display the current positions of all four wheels. Last but not least, the Toyota Safety Sense package is in base spec now.

In Thailand, where the pickup will become available later this month, a special version called Hilux Revo Rocco will be offered with different bumpers and radiator grille. Sales in Eastern Europe should begin later this summer, and Western Europe should get the new Hilux in the fall. The latter market will be getting a new top trim level called Invincible, which comes with a special body kit and enhanced interior trim.
