Car Tuning

Classical Saab 96 EV conversion could be yours for mere $1,969

This 51-year-old Saab 96 only has 20,000 miles (32,000 km) under its belt, runs on electricity, and is up for sale in Missouri, USA for a symbolic amount of U.S. $1,969.

Throughout its life cycle, the Saab 96 used to sell exclusively with gasoline engines ranging in power from 38 to 68 hp (28 – 51 kW). In 2009, tuners took the petrol mill out in favor of a single electric motor rated at 83 hp (62 kW). Due to it being a low-end engine, the car maxes out at 60 mph (96 km/h) and eventually drops down to 22 hp (15 kW) during prolonged trips as the heat builds up and the voltage goes down.

The coupe carries ten batteries rated at 1.99 kilowatt-hours each, which easily gives it 60 miles (100 kilometers) of range. The transmission is four-speed manual, and the drive is on the front axle.

The one thing that remains unclear is whether the 20,000 miles of use specified in the ad refer to the total lifetime mileage or just the post-conversion period.
