Maserati announces new additions to its Trofeo performance lineup

Maserati has posted a teaser pic promising to unveil two new performance sedans on Friday, August 10. By the look of it, the Levante Trofeo will be joined by Quattroporte Trofeo and Ghibli Trofeo.

The original Levante Trofeo SUV debuted a couple of years ago armed with the 3.8-liter, twin-turbo Ferrari F154 AQ V8. It produced 730 Nm (538 lb-ft) of torque and different amounts of power in Europe (580 PS / 427 kW) and USA (590 hp / 440 kW). The U.S. spec could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, while the EU version lagged slightly behind with 0-100 km/h done in 4.1 s.

Both sedans might end up sharing the engine model with the Levante Trofeo, but even then, its power will likely differ depending on the specific model. The Quattroporte should receive a mid-life refresh sometime later this year, so its performance trim might emerge simultaneously with the update.

As for the Ghibli, the four-door luxury vehicle does not have a V8 option on the list. Its top-end S spec (called S Q4 in AWD variants) comes powered by a 3.0-liter turbo V6 rated at 430 hp (321 kW) and 580 Nm (428 lb-ft) of torque. The 2WD spec needs 4.9 seconds to hit 100 km/h from standstill and the 4WD spec needs 4.7 s.

In other news, Maserati will soon be premiering its newest in-house-designed 3.0L V6 “Nettuno” engine capable of 630 hp (470 kW) and 730 Nm (538 lb-ft). The mill will go under the hood of the new Maserati MC20 hypercar at first and will become available with other models later, but in a trimmed-down form. Chances that the new Trofeo series gets this cutting-edge engine tech are pretty low.

The MC20 debuts on September 09, 2020.
