Bizarre AMC AMX/3 Concept fetches $400k at an auction

The 50-year-old AMC AMX/3 coupe debuted at a Chicago motor show in 1970 and earned the “Best General Motors Vehicle” award. It found a new owner this week for $400,000, so let’s take a closer look at it.

The one-off vehicle was co-designed by GM, Bizzarrini and BMW based on the old AMX/2. It received a stainless-steel body with smoothed-out lines, a solid rear window, and a retractable rear spoiler. It got to keep its predecessor’s signature pop-up headlights and dual hood intakes.

A 6.4-liter V8 rated at 340 hp (254 kW) and 583 Nm (430 lb-ft) of torque takes the car from standstill to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 5.5 seconds. The transmission is four-speed manual, and the curb weight amounts to 1,300 kilograms (2,866 lbs).

GM had originally intended to produce 5,000 such cars per year, but financial problems forced the manufacturer to wrap up the project in early 1970s. A total of nine such cars were produced, out of which only five survive to this date, two of them unfinished.
