SSC Tuatara fails to set a world record again

Following a controversial attempt by SSC North America to claim a world speed record with its hypercar Tuatara in October, a second run was arranged – and ended in failure due to reasons hopefully unrelated with actual engine performance.

To those who forgot, let us remind that Oliver Webb piloted the first production unit of the SSC Tuatara on a straight raceway in two directions in October, averaging 509 km/h (316 mph). However, after many issues with the published video proof and strong public criticism, the company decided to try for a more open approach and hold another test run.

It invited such star reviewers as Robert Mitchell, Schmee150 and Mischa Sharudin as witnesses to a private runway on December 12-13, but Mitchell was the only one who managed to come because of the pandemic restrictions. He then reported the failure, blaming it on shortcomings in the way the test was arranged.

The car’s 5.9-liter V8 rated at 1,750 hp (1,305 kW) kept overheating from the start due to the continued attempts to accelerate to the max speed. Two spark plugs ultimately failed, forcing the test crew to abort the attempt. Even so, the hypercar has managed to hit 404 kilometers per hour (251 mph).

The vlogger said that numerous electronic sensors for acceleration, geolocation and other important parameters were to blame for the failure. Wary of another test failure, SSC chose to fit the hypercar with as many as five GPS systems for a guaranteed result. Ironically, the added hardware prevented the hood from closing and compromised a number of sensors, including those controlling engine overheat.

Seemingly unfetted by the setback, Jerod Shelby’s company – which has spent a decade working on the Tuatara – intends to arrange yet another test run and do everything right that time around. We will soon see how the candidate for world’s fastest vehicle will fare, especially when compared to the upcoming competition like the Hennessey Venom F5 and the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut.
