Rumor: Ford Ranger to go hybrid in the top spec

According to Australian media, the new Ford Ranger flagship will utilize a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Specifically, reports claim that the new base spec will incorporate a 2.3-liter turbo four-pot joined with an electric motor for 367 PS (362 hp / 270 kW) and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) total. Both the next-gen Ranger and its sibling Everest should get this powertrain. Fuel consumption is anticipated at roughly 3 liters per 100 kilometers in mixed-cycle driving.

Nothing is known about the fate of the diesel engines, which are banned in some countries but remain in others.

The Ranger Raptor will allegedly trade its 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel for the Bronco’s 2.7-liter V6. This would raise its power from 213 to 314 PS (210 to 310 hp; 157 to 231 kW, respectively). The maximum torque will increase only marginally: from 500 to 540 Nm (369 to 398 lb-ft).
