Unofficial: Toyota’s GR Super Sport hybrid to pump out 1,000 HP

Between the GR-badged Yaris, Supra, 86 and Corolla models, Toyota has quite a nice lineup of performance cars going on, with the Hilux expected to join the list soon. But a true flagship – a hypercar, no less – is also approaching.

Toyota revealed the original GR Super Sport Concept in 2018 and intends to bring the production car to the market in 2022. Its final name remains unknown.

Powering the mid-engine prototype is a TS050 racecar engine with six cylinders arranged in a V shape, 2.4 liters of displacement, and dual turbochargers. Assisted by multiple electric motors, the unit can churn out 986 PS (972 hp / 725 kW) when installed in the racer. However, according to Autocar, its road-legal version will be even more powerful with over 1,014 PS (1,000 hp / 746 kW) hitting the crank.

This would not be surprising at all, since the main competitors – the Mercedes-AMG One and the Aston Martin Valkyrie – pack 1,200 PS and 1,014 PS, respectively.

It remains to be announced how expensive the GR Super Sport will turn out to be, but more than $1,000,000 USD seems highly likely.
