Porsche Macan exposes its dual nature heading into the future

According to Porsche CTO Michael Steiner, the Macan SUV will be succeeded by two different models. The electric version is already in development, and the company wants its prototypes to cover more than 3,000,000 kilometers (1,864,113 miles) before launching production.

Despite the electric powertrain, the Macan EV will handle, feel and look like any other Porsche car while being faster and packed with more tech than its fossil fuel-powered counterpart, Steiner said.

It will arrive based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture co-designed with Audi and also used in the Audi A6 e-tron. The platform supports traction batteries up to 100 kilowatt-hours in volume, and Porsche claims the SUV will charge faster than the Taycan does thanks to an optional 270kW+ charger.

Multiple modifications are expected to hit the market, including a high performance spec. As for the batteries, however, the company does not intend to offer long-range versions of the Macan EV if it will mean making the car heavier. Instead, the range increase will be slow and gradual.

Last but not least, the production name hasn’t been decided upon yet, which means the electric crossover might end up called something entirely different from ‘Macan’.

The gas-powered Macan SUV will not go anywhere for the time being, remaining on sale side-by-side with its battery cousin. The automaker promises to facelift it at least once more. Unlike the Panamera and the Cayenne, there will be no Macan hybrid.
