Renault Megane hatchback goes hybrid in Europe

Following the example of the Renault Megane Estate E-Tech that debuted last year (see video), the hatch-backed Megane is now also obtainable with the same powertrain.

A 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine works in tandem with dual electric motors to deliver 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW) to the wheels. A 9.8-kWh traction battery yields up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) of WLTP-rated mixed-cycle driving range. Urban range is slightly better at 65 km (40.4 miles). Fuel consumption averages out at 1.2 liters per 100 kilometers (196 MPG), and harmful emissions amount to 28 grams per kilometer.

The Megane HEV uses its electric motors to launch from standing still, and only engages the petrol engine if rapid acceleration is required. You can push the EV button to force it into an all-electric mode.

Customers may choose from four available trim levels. The base trim includes Multi-Sense drive mode selection, a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster with several UI skins, an electronic handbrake with Auto-Hold support, and more. The two topmost trims benefit from Easy Park Assist.

Sales in Europe have already begun, with prices varying between €37,300 and €41,000.
