Video: 3,000-HP Dodge Ram diesel goes out with a bang during dyno run

We are all used to reading about test stand explosions thanks to SpaceX providing the material over the past months, but today’s story has a Dodge Ram pickup stealing the spotlight.

The incident occurred during the Ultimate Callout Challenge, an event dedicated to extracting the maximum potential out of diesel powertrains. The list of attendees included an elderly Dodge Ram truck outfitted with a Cummins I6 and a high-end turbo kit.

The car immediately drew attention to itself thanks to a few reasons, the most compelling one being the raw power output of 2,700 HP (2,013 kW). As if that weren’t enough, its owner used a nitrous-oxide system to bolster it further to 3,000 HP (2,237 kW).

When the dyno run began, the driver kept revving up the engine to the limit of its capabilities, which he eventually discovered as the powertrain blew up in a spectacular explosion sending cylinder and piston shrapnel flying everywhere.

Miraculously enough, no one was hit and killed during the incident, and the test crew seemed to take it in their stride.
