2nd-gen BMW 2 Series breaks cover with revised tech, new power options

The new BMW 2 Series Coupe has arrived, and the manufacturer calls it an ideological successor to the original BMW 02 from over half a century ago.

Until the M2 comes, the new M240i xDrive spec will sit atop the range with a three-liter inline-six engine worth 374 PS (369 hp / 275 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. This one has M Sport brakes and a rear differential by default, and you can opt for adaptive M suspension. It needs 4.3 seconds to sprint from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph).

Other options include a gasoline four-cylinder rated at 184 PS (181 hp / 135 kW) and a diesel four-pot assisted by an electric motor for 190 PS (187 hp / 140 kW).

Manual gearbox enthusiasts will be disappointed, because eight-speed Steptronic A/T is the only way to go with the new 2 Series. You could pay extra for a Steptronic Sport version, which has launch control and rapid acceleration features.

The interior looks much like that of the more upmarket BMWs now. Digital gauges with a 5.1-inch display and an 8.8-inch infotainment system are now standard equipment, and opting for a higher trim unlocks a 12.3-inch digital dash and a 10.25-inch touchscreen display. For the first time for the 2 Series, HUD will be available as an option.

Customer deliveries in Germany will begin in early 2022 starting from €39,700 for the base spec.
