China patents an electric open-top hypercar

Chinese premium carmaker Nio plans on resurrecting the EP9 model it revealed five years ago, but as a speedster this time around. Its images have recently surfaced in the database of the China Patent Office, suggesting that Nio might be after the Ferrari Monza SP2 or the McLaren Elva with its latest project.

The EP9 coupe (see video) came out in six production units and never made it to the mass market, having been bought out by the CEO of the company, the CEO of Xiaomi, and the founders of Hillhouse Capital, Tencent, JD.com, Autohome, and Li Auto. It was the emerging brand’s first production car.

The technical parameters were quite astonishing for a first attempt. The Nio EP9 came powered by four electric motors joining their efforts for 1,360 PS (1,341 hp / 1,000 kW) and 1,480 Nm (1,092 lb-ft) of torque. It could hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in 2.7 seconds and go all the way up to 313 km/h (195 mph). With 427 kilometers (265 miles) of uninterrupted driving from full battery, it could replenish all the charge within mere 45 minutes.

It remains to be seen what the speedster version will be like and whether it retains the specifications listed above.
