Nevada greenlights Elon Musk’s Vegas Loop tunnel

The Boring Company, which is owned by Elon Musk, has received an official permission from the Nevada authorities to continue its Vegas Loop project envisioning 46 kilometers of underground car tunnels and 51 access stations.

We still haven’t heard any date estimates, and the company still has to reach mutual understanding with Las Vegas authorities, as well as obtain individual permissions for the construction of every station. Nevertheless, the executives of The Boring Company believe they will be able to procure most of the necessary documents as early as next month.

The development of the underground network will succeed in multiple stages. First, the company plans to launch between 5 and 10 stations within six months. It then intends to commission 15-20 stations per year, building them close to the main infrastructural objects.

Commenting on the decision, TBC President Steve Davis said the optimum throughput of the system would be 57,000 people per hour. Unlike the regular subway, Vegas Loop transportation pods will not stop automatically at all stations; instead, passengers will be able to choose their destination and be transported there within mere minutes. For example, a trip from Conference Center to Allegiant Stadium (around 3.5 miles / 6 kilometers long) will take four minutes and $6 USD.

On an interesting side note, The Boring Company has signed an agreement with the Las Vegas authorities according to which it undertakes to share its proceeds with the authorities over the next 50 years.
