Honda reveals some parameters of the U.S.-spec Civic Type R

Honda’s hottest hatchback keeps its usual 2.0-liter turbo-four mill under the hood, but gains 9 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque in its latest design iteration.

This brings the total to 315 hp (321 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm), making the new Civic Type R the marque’s most powerful production car to ever grace the USA. Having said that, it still failed to surpass the old-gen Civic models available in Europe and Japan.

In this new generation, the K20C1 engine benefits from improved turbochargers, a new impeller wheel, enhanced air intake system and modified active-valve exhaust system. The company claims that the peak torque is now available at a wider range of revs – from 2,600 until 4,000 RPM. The power-to-weight ratio is also better at 157.8 horsepower, up from 153.3.

Mated to the engine is a six-speed manual transmission featuring a lighter flywheel, RPM-optimized ratios and switching patterns. A self-locking differential is included in standard equipment.

The car rides on 19-inch wheels, a downgrade from the previous generation, but their extra width should improve course stability. The track is 25 mm (1 inch) wider at the front and 19 mm (0.75 in) wider at the rear axle. Last but not least, the brake system has been upgraded to minimize unsprung mass and ensure longer and more efficient operation.

The engines for all U.S.-spec Civic Type Rs will be made at the Honda factory in Ohio, while the cars themselves will come from Japan. Sales will begin this autumn, but prices and dynamic performance numbers remain to be revealed.
