Peugeot 3008 & 5008 go mild hybrid in Europe

The Peugeot 3008 and 5008 will soon be available with a new part-electric drivetrain composed of a 1.2-liter turbo three-cylinder engine and a small electric motor built into a preselector DCT box.

The engine belongs to the PureTech series and has been in production for a decade now; it is in its third generation so far. Compared to the old model, the Mk3 gains 5 horsepower and churns out 136 PS (134 hp / 100 kW) along with 230 Nm (170 lb-ft) of torque. The valve train now uses a chain instead of a belt for the drive, the turbine has variable geometry, and the block supports Miller cycle for better fuel economy.

The Aisin A/T was replaced with a Punch preselector gearbox incorporating an electric motor rated at 29 PS (29 hp / 21 kW). The motor only engages when the car needs a fast launch or moves at lower accelerations. The traction battery is minuscule at 0.9 kilowatt-hours of capacity, which translates into several hundred meters of purely electric driving range at best.

Sales in Europe are expected to begin in early 2023. Later on, other Stellantis models are expected to receive the same powertrain.
