Unique manual Mercedes-AMG E-Class fetches a bargain bin price

A 2000 Mercedes E55 AMG (W210) with a number of unusual modifications under the hood crossed the auction block in the USA not long ago and went for $12,500. One would think it would be worth more, given its unique charms.

The main distinguishing feature of the car comes in the form of a six-speed manual transmission borrowed from a Chrysler Crossfire. Transmission transplants are never easy, but this one may have succeeded because Mercedes had a partnership going with the American automaker back in 2000. The companies shared mechanical components and even whole platforms, so with this bit of context in place, it doesn’t sound as surprising.

Powering the E-Class is a 5.4-liter V8 equipped with a custom flywheel. It delivers 354 PS (349 hp / 260 kW) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels through a Quaife LSD. Modern engine and transmission control units help things work together smoothly.

It is unclear why such a gem went for a song, but if the photos are any indication, the sedan could be a high-mileage example.
