Audi reveals its transformable Activesphere Concept

Audi has finally unveiled the last entry in its ‘Sphere’ concept car lineup, the Activesphere. It is a coupe-like crossover SUV designed by the marque’s design branch in Malibu.

One of the main features comes in the shape of a transforming rear end, which forgoes the traditional tailgate for a drop section and a sliding glass section. The whole enables you to turn the SUV into a pickup truck of sorts to haul equipment and sports gear without sacrificing the comfort of the people inside.

There is also a transparent section instead of the radiator grille, 22-inch wheels with sliding aerodynamic trims, as well as glass inserts in the roof and the lower doors.

The cabin seats four and has zero displays in view. Hold your excitement, though: Audi imagines the driver and the passengers all wearing VR headsets all the time. The driver can only see the digital dash with the headset on, and the passengers get their individual infotainment units. Voice commands are used to control everything from navigation to climate.

Powering the design study on wheels is a dual-motor powertrain rated at 442 PS (436 hp / 325 kW) and 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) of torque. The battery holds 100 kilowatt-hours of juice for 600 km (373 miles) of range.

Using a VR headset to completely seal the driver’s vision in digital infotainment? Does audi not realize the amount of hackers there are in the world who are fully capable of misleading drivers by changing what they see to a straight path when in reality they are driving into the dead center of a building, not to mention that said hacker could also trick you into believing that you are too slow, so you press on the Accelerate Pedal more to reach what you think is the right speed when it’s too fast? Just because it sounds cool doesn’t mean that it is logically smart, I would trust a car from 1915 over a VR car any second of the year, thank you very much, at least the classic would tell me the truth.
