Lexus designs infrared emitters to improve HVAC efficiency

Lexus has come up with an innovative design of a climate control system based on high-efficiency infrared heat emitters. Originally designed for the all-electric RZ SUV, the tech should extend its battery range thanks to low power consumption.

The panels generating the infrared radiation will be mounted at the front panel at knee level, concealed under the trim. The rays will directly heat up all hard surfaces in their area of effect. The carmaker compares the effect with a warm blanket draped over your feet and legs.

The feature will help save up to 8% of the electricity normally used to keep the interior of a car warm during the cold season. At the same time, traditional heat fans will continue to be installed on cars to speed up the heating when you need it A.S.A.P.

The buyers of the RZ will be able to opt for the infrared warmers starting from mid-2023, and Lexus says the feature will only be available in a limited number of countries at first.
