Audi to rename a large portion of its model range

Reports that Audi was looking to revise its vehicle nomenclature have now been officially confirmed. Per CEO Markus Duesmann as quoted by Auto Bild, the company will repurpose its even-numbered model designations for EVs, leaving the odd numbers for ICE cars.

This literally means that the next generation of the gas-powered Audi A4 will be renamed to A5, while the A6 will become A7 to avoid confusion. The indexes thus freed will be reused for electric models.

It is still unknown what body styles these new A5 and A7 will receive. According to Audi CTO Oliver Hoffmann, who was also present at the interview, enthusiasts may start looking forward to more high-performance, emotionally engaging special editions. He also confirmed that the company was planning to start equipping its models with a new internal combustion engine model next year – the final generation before the marque goes all-electric.

The all-electric A6 sedan and A6 Avant wagon have already premiered as concept cars earlier – you can find both in the gallery and the video below. Both run on the Premium Platform Electric and are slated for launch in 2024. The battery-electric Q6 SUV is also based on the same platform and scheduled to arrive before the end of the current year. For the A4, there is still no new info but Audi promised to give it a powerful RS variant a couple of years ago.

Despite the large-scale renaming, Hoffmann emphasized that the ‘e-tron’ moniker would not be going anywhere soon. It has already become an iconic nameplate for Audi, so it will continue using it for new electric models.
