Jeep is testing an off-road self-driving system

Carmaker Jeep has posted some test footage from the trials of its new semi-autonomous driving solution for off-road conditions.

Despite being part of Stellantis, Jeep says the feature will be exclusive to its cars. It will also be versatile, meaning that the drivers will be able to use it both on paved roads and out in the wild.

The test vehicles in the video are Grand Cherokee hybrids. You can catch a glimpse of the specific navigation hardware used and see the SUVs driving themselves on the road. The filming location is Mohave Desert, a favorite destination of all off-road enthusiasts across the United States thanks to its complex and varied landscape.

Jeep expects the self-driving feature to be equally useful to both experienced Jeep drivers and those who seldom veer off the trodden path. The former will be able to increase their engagement by offloading some of the functions to the electronics on board, while the latter will be able to improve their qualification by observing the autopilot.

One last important point that the carmaker highlights in the description is that the 40-second video is just a teaser of what’s to come: a full-length movie dedicated to the system will be released later this summer.
