BMW take the letter ‘i’ off its gas-powered cars

BMW will change its nomenclature soon, removing the letter ‘i’ from the names of its non-electrified vehicles, a Bimmerpost insider reports.

This is reportedly necessary to avoid confusion of purely gas-powered cars (like the 330i) with all-electric ones (like the i4, i7 or iX). As different as they are, some people may still come to associate that particular letter in the alphanumeric index with a certain degree of electrification. To prevent any possible misunderstanding, the entire project range will allegedly be renamed in the near future.

We are told that all diesel-powered models will get to keep their letter ‘d’ and all four-wheel-drive models will keep their ‘X’. The hybrids will continue to be marked with an ‘e’.
