Ford recalls 125,000 cars that may spontaneously combust

Ford has initiated yet another recall of its vehicles, this time around asking for a return of 125,322 units. According to NHTSA, the issue concerns the Maverick hybrid (shown here), the Lincoln Corsair, and the Ford Escape. All three may burst into flames due to subpar engine components.

The NHTSA has conducted an investigation into 23 cases of fire allegedly caused by the failure of the 2.5-liter engine common for all three cars mentioned above. It ultimately discovered that the crankshaft bearings were too weak and ultimately bored a through-hole in the cylinder block.

Ford says it has already addressed all these shortcomings in production, replacing the bearings and making modifications in other units for added safety. However, all affected car owners still have to send them in A.S.A.P. for a repair in order to be safe.
