Nissan has officially announced the intention to mass-produce electric Qashqai and Juke SUVs in Sunderland, UK. Like the rumors had suggested, the allocated investment is £3 billion.
The Japanese automaker is already producing ICE variants of the Qashqai and Juke in Great Britain, as well as the all-electric Leaf. Later on, both SUVs will be phased out by successor models running on battery power alone. The design will lean towards the Hyper Urban and Hyper Punk concepts shown in the gallery here.
The actual production start date remains unannounced as the company is still prepping the site. Nissan says it is in negotiations with AESC regarding the construction of a traction battery manufacturing facility next to the main industrial complex in Sutherland. Once it is greenlit, the construction will proceed as planned.
