Nissan Z breaks through a ¼-mile world record with stock internals

AMS Performance has managed to tune a Nissan Z without messing with its engine components so that it completed a 402-meter run in record-short 9.23 seconds, hitting 240 km/h (149 mph) towards the end.

The tuner emphasizes that no internal parts were swapped out or otherwise upgraded. This means that the pistons, the rods, the cylinders, the heads and the valves all stayed stock. The same applies to the transmission – the team worked with a nine-speed automatic for the purposes of the test.

So, what was modified? On the hardware side of things, it sounds like turbos were the only parts replaced. AMS installed its own part of turbochargers and fine-tuned the ECU to account for the new boost pressure curve. As a result, the Z started pumping out impressive 832 PS (820 hp / 610 kW) at the crank – more than twice as much as the stock 405 PS (400 hp / 298 kW).

The upgrade should be available for ordering in the United States soon.
