Renault Megane leaves Great Britain without saying goodbye

Renault has wrapped up the production of the UK-spec Megane hatchback and estate, explaining that both had been seeing increasingly poor sales in that country. The sedan version will continue to be available in other countries for another couple of years, after which the nameplate will pass on to all-electric vehicles.

The first Renault Megane emerged in the distant year 1995. Rewind to 2021, and only around 800 units were sold in the UK, a dismal result compared to around 21,800 Ford Focus or 30,200 Volkswagen Golf units.

The latest generation of the Megane (peek inside our gallery for a closer look) came out seven years ago. Its best year in terms of popularity was 2017, when the company moved 168,000 cars. However, if you also consider the previous generations, as many as 465,778 Meganes found new owners in 2014.

In France, buyers can still grab a Renault Megane E-Tech starting from €37,200. The car utilizes a single electric motor rated at 130 PS (128 hp / 96 kW) and offers around 300 km (186 miles) of driving range. Higher specs offer up to 220 PS (217 hp / 160 kW) and up to 470 km (292 miles) of range.
