SAIC and Huawei’s affordable e-SUV hits 10k preorders in an hour

Shangjie, an automobile brand co-founded between SAIC Group and Huawei in China, has opened its preorder books for a new SUV known as the Shangjie H5 (or Saic H5 for short). Attractively priced between 159,800 and 199,800 CNY, the car collected 10,000 preorders in 60 minutes.

The Shangjie H5 was first introduced in August. It is a mid-size crossover utility vehicle designed for the Chinese domestic market. It is sized 4,780 x 1,910 x 1,664 mm large with 2,840 mm between the axles and two powertrain types to choose from – battery-electric (BEV) and extended-range hybrid (EREV).

Starting with the hybrid, it packs a 1.5-liter engine acting solely as a power generator and a 204-PS (201-hp / 150-kW) motor driving the rear axle. Once charged, it can do 235 km (146 miles) on electricity alone, while the combined range with a full tank comes to 1,360 km (845 miles).

In turn, the BEV can be specced with either a 204-PS (201-hp / 150-kW) or a 245-PS (242-hp / 180-kW) motor. Batteries are available in 64.6-kWh and 80-kWh sizes. Ranges vary depending on your chosen configuration, with the minimum being 525 km (326 miles) and the maximum 655 km (407 miles).

On the technological side of things, every SUV can be optioned with a Huawei ADAS package complete with a LiDAR, three millimeter-range radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and 11 cameras. The infotainment system can reside on a display either 10.25 or 15.6 inches large. Further options include up to seven airbags, a driver recognition system, panoramic roof, heate/ventilated seats and other features.

When it unveiled the H5 in August, Shangjie estimated the starting price at 169,800 Chinese Yuan. It has since managed to drop it by 10,000 CNY, undercutting similar offerings from the competition and making the H5 its most affordable electrified vehicle in the portfolio.
