Subaru previews a petrol and an electric STI

Subaru has come to the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo with a couple of five-door concept cars hinting at the possible return of the STI nameplate. Let’s take a closer look at both.

Starting with the electric Subaru Performance-E STI, it is a rather long car that bridges the gap between traditional hatchbacks and wagons with its experimental body style. It features a rather elaborate front end with an air intake on the hood, multiple spoilers at the rear end and a diffuser with a third brake light. The company claims that, while comfortable and practical enough for daily driving, the EV packs plenty of handling, performance and smart technology.

As for the Subaru Performance-B STI, it defaults onto the company’s signature combo of flat-four engine and all-wheel drive. Based on the photos, it looks much like the mass-produced WRX, just with flared fenders and some aggressive aero including a towering rear wing.

All technical specifications are secret, and Subaru doesn’t make it clear whether either car may ever reach production. We suppose the E-STI might later distill into a battery-powered successor to the Levorg, but this is just speculation at this point.
