Tata Punch.ev bows in India

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, a division of Tata Motors India, has unveiled its next production vehicle – a subcompact electric crossover named Punch.ev. In some ways, it is based on the gas-powered Tata Punch introduced in 2021, but the company stresses that it is based on an altered acti.ev platform and new tech, making it unique. Prices start from 1,099,000 Indian Rupees.

Bumpers and headlights are the biggest exterior differences from the petrol version. Customers can choose from five trim levels and two powertrains. The base trim makes do with 82 PS (81 hp / 60 kW) and 114 Nm (84 lb-ft) of torque and offers up to 315 km (195 miles) of range according to the local test standard known as the MIDC (Modified Indian Test Cycle).

The top trim is called Long Range and comes with a superior battery pack good for 421 km (261 miles). It also buffs the output to 122 PS (121 hp / 90 kW) and 190 Nm (140 lb-ft). Outfitted like this, the Tata Punch.ev reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.5 seconds and tops out at 140 km/h (87 mph).

The manufacturer ships the battery pack with a warranty valid for 8 years or 160,000 km (99,419 miles), whichever comes first. You can charge it up from 3.3kW and 7.2kW AC sources or from fast 50kW terminals. The fastest charging source will replenish the charge from 10 to 80 percent in 56 minutes.

The main trunk size is 360 liters, but there is also a small 14-liter frunk. Depending on the trim level, you can expect 10.2-inch digital dash and infotainment displays, leatherette seats, a power-assisted sunroof, cruise control, surround view cameras and a wireless phone charger.

Opting for the most expensive spec will lighten your account by 1,449,000 Rupees.

Shipments start on Monday, January 22.
